Skin Health During Menopause: What to Expect and How to Care For It.

The Menopause…

As all of you know by now, here at My Skin Boutique we pride ourselves on educating our clients about their health and well being. That being said, we have become very aware of the recent rise in conversations and awareness around that very big topic.. “The Menopause,” and to a certain extent our lack of knowledge that helps us to help you look after yourself, or just become more aware of some of the side effects that may lay ahead as we navigate this very complex change in a woman’s life. 

We recently attended a menopause workshop so that we could gain better understanding of why our skin, mood, body shape and health seem to take a turn for the worst when we should be able to say we are living our best lives! 

Here are some facts that we found really interesting…

  • 80% of women suffer with menopause symptoms and 25% of that percentage will have severe symptoms.
  • 71% of women don’t even realise that they are suffering with menopause symptoms and can be miss diagnosing with something else. 
  • Peri menopause usually starts in your 40’s and can last for 2-10 years
  • If you are 50 or over and you have not had a period for 1 year you will medically be classed as in the menopause. If you are under 50 it would be 2 years with no periods. 

We were truly astounded at what the body goes through when that little miracle hormone known as oestrogen decides to not hang around anymore. Healthy hormone balance is very important for us, but they are not just there to regulate periods or help us reproduce. 

Oestrogen helps with over 350 different functions within the body, these range from temperature regulation, bone density, microbiome support, brain functionality, emotion regulation, skin health… The list is truly endless, and so to is the list of side effects that the menopause can cause. Some of which can be:

  • Hair loss
  • Facial hair growth
  • Uncontrollable emotions
  • Brain fog
  • A sense of “not recognising yourself”
