Skin Health During Menopause: What to Expect and How to Care For It.

The Menopause…

As all of you know by now, here at My Skin Boutique we pride ourselves on educating our clients about their health and well being. That being said, we have become very aware of the recent rise in conversations and awareness around that very big topic.. “The Menopause,” and to a certain extent our lack of knowledge that helps us to help you look after yourself, or just become more aware of some of the side effects that may lay ahead as we navigate this very complex change in a woman’s life.

We recently attended a menopause workshop so that we could gain better understanding of why our skin, mood, body shape and health seem to take a turn for the worst when we should be able to say we are living our best lives!

Here are some facts that we found really interesting…

  • 80% of women suffer with menopause symptoms and 25% of that percentage will have severe symptoms.
  • 71% of women don’t even realise that they are suffering with menopause symptoms and can be miss diagnosing with something else.
  • Peri menopause usually starts in your 40’s and can last for 2-10 years
  • If you are 50 or over and you have not had a period for 1 year you will medically be classed as in the menopause. If you are under 50 it would be 2 years with no periods.

We were truly astounded at what the body goes through when that little miracle hormone known as oestrogen decides to not hang around anymore. Healthy hormone balance is very important for us, but they are not just there to regulate periods or help us reproduce.

Oestrogen helps with over 350 different functions within the body, these range from temperature regulation, bone density, microbiome support, brain functionality, emotion regulation, skin health… The list is truly endless, and so to is the list of side effects that the menopause can cause. Some of which can be:

  • Hair loss
  • Facial hair growth
  • Uncontrollable emotions
  • Brain fog
  • A sense of “not recognising yourself”
  • Weight gain/body shape change
  • dry/itchy/oily breakout prone skin
  • Skin tags
  • Rosacea
  • Increased wrinkles or lax skin
  • Unusual skin sensations
  • Brittle bones
  • Hot sweats/migraines
  • heavy/irregular/non existent periods

What a list of things to look forward to… SO what can we do here at My Skin Boutique to help you, you may ask?

As your skin and body is experiencing these change’s, you will need to change what you are putting into your body and what you are using on your skin. It’s estimated that within the first 5 years of starting the menopause we will lose 30% of our natural collagen production. That is a lot of collagen lost! Collagen is responsible for providing the support, strength and structure throughout our bodies and specifically helping fibroblasts form in the dermis which help new cells grow keeping our skin youthful! If we are not supporting our skin with collagen building ingredients then we cannot expect to look hydrated, plump, glowing and smooth! At one time when you may have suffered with oily breakouts your skin may now be dry and itchy so that foaming cleanser you once loved may now not be for you, and let’s face it we all love to see new products on our shelves and in our makeup bags!

Getting yourself booked in for a skin consultation, even if you have been coming to us for a while, will be a great opportunity for us to reassess your skin needs and ensure you are on the correct treatment path going forward. Why not book in for a facial while you are here, this will make the consultation FREE and really help reset your mood and have some well deserved me time! A facial with us will ensure we are reaching those deeper layers of the skin where the collagen is produced which we just can’t reach topically, this will mean we can start to wake up the collagen again and create some long lasting changes.

We can also advise on ways to increase that natural production of collagen again through the right use of vitamins, minerals and nutrition and it’s much easier than you think! Adding something like the daily “gut glow up” drink to your morning routine will increase your gut health and well being tenfold, and when we start to see improvements in these areas all those other symptoms mentioned above will start to improve as we are giving our bodies the fuel and ingredients it needs to function to its best ability.

Now, we know hair loss during menopause is something a lot of women suffer with, however, what we seem to be losing from our heads crops up on our lip or chin! This is so common and there really is no need to suffer in silence and think that you are the only one running home and plucking every night. If this sounds like you then you may be the perfect candidate for laser hair removal. It’s quick, easy and you can start to see results after the first session. Check out our laser hair removal options here
